Mozambique
Mozambique continues on the slow growth trajectory that followed an economic crisis in 2016. Macroeconomic conditions are improving in the low-income country, but economic performance has yet to revert to pre-crisis levels. About 70 percent of the country’s population of 29.4 million live and work in rural areas. It is endowed with ample arable land, water, and energy, as well as mineral resources and newly discovered natural gas offshore, deep seaports, and a relatively large potential pool of labor. Mozambique ranks third among those African countries most exposed to multiple weather-related hazards and suffers from periodic cyclones, droughts, floods, and related epidemics, as demonstrated by Cyclone Idai and its aftermath in 2019. Earthquakes pose another risk.
