El Salvador
The lower-middle-income country of El Salvador has suffered from persistently low economic growth. The smallest country in Central America, El Salvador had a population of 6.4 million in 2018 and is among the most densely populated countries in the world. El Salvador is exposed to a variety of natural hazards and is located in one of the most seismically active regions. The annual average loss from earthquakes is nearly US$176 million, or 0.7 percent of gross domestic product (GDP). Other major hazards include floods, landslides, tropical storms, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, and droughts––particularly in El Niño seasons.
