Malawi
Located in southern Africa, Malawi is a low-income, landlocked country. The economy is heavily dependent on agriculture and vulnerable to external shocks. According to its 2018 census, Malawi has an estimated population of 17.5 million, up from 13 million in 2008. Flooding and cyclones are high risks, as demonstrated by Cyclone Idai and its aftermath in 2019. As a result of climate change, the intensity, duration, and frequency of weather-related shocks are likely to increase in Malawi. Furthermore, the country is located within the great East African Rift Valley, an area prone to severe and frequent earthquakes.
