Description
Enhancing Seismic Safety of Public Facilities in the Kyrgyz Republic sought to improve the safety and energy efficiency of schools, hospitals, and other public buildings. This included a thorough assessment of common building types among such facilities through field visits, analytical work, and inspections to improve evidence-based knowledge on the safety of public infrastructure. The findings would provide guidance to other World Bank projects considering seismic safety issues in project designs, the selection of target investments, implementation of the work, and monitoring. A particular focus was on World Bank-wide collaboration with task teams from other sectors—for example, the Energy Global Practice—that were engaged in projects with seismic safety components.
Activities supported by the World Bank
-
Identification of priorities and engineering solutions to enhance safety and energy efficiency
-
Provision of technical reviews, guidance, and recommendations on structural assessments and upgrades to building designs in consideration of seismic safety issues
Main outputs
-
Seismic analysis reports providing detailed feedback on and recommendations for schools, kindergartens, and health facilities
-
Provision of cross-support to other World Bank-financed projects, such as the Heat Supply Improvement Project (US$46 million investment), to consider seismic safety issues of public facilities and review structural analysis and design proposals for seismic safety
