Description

Improving the Safety and Resilience of School Infrastructure in Cali, Colombia supported the municipality of Cali in formulating its first municipal school infrastructure plan. The plan’s objective is to improve the condition, capacity, and management of the school infrastructure over 12 years, addressing the need to enhance the performance of school buildings in case of earthquakes.  

In 2017, the municipality launched “Mi Comunidad es Escuela,” with an estimated investment of US$170 million, to improve the condition of school facilities. The World Bank engagement built on this effort.

 

Activities supported by the World Bank

  • Training sessions on the use and application in Cali of the Roadmap for Safer and Resilient Schools (RSRS) and the Global Library of School Infrastructure (GLOSI), both of which provided a methodological framework to guide the design of the municipal infrastructure plan

  • Provision of technical advice on the implementation of the RSRS and facilitation of access to international experiences

  • Technical support to develop and train local education specialists in using a methodology and tools for estimating student demand to 2035 and the need for new school infrastructure

  • Accessibility analysis of the school infrastructure network to identify opportunities to optimize the benefits from investments across the municipality

  • Strengthening of institutional capacity to use and apply risk information for decision- and policymaking

  • Technical knowledge exchange visit on school infrastructure topics, in particular the formulation and implementation of school infrastructure plans and the management of school infrastructure
