Armenia
With its poverty rates declining drastically since 2004, Armenia has achieved upper-middle-income status, but its 3 million citizens continue to be exposed to major risk from natural hazards. Located in the high-activity Alps-Himalaya seismic zone, the country has historically been prone to earthquakes. Over 25,000 people were killed in the devastating 1988 Spitak earthquake alone. Other hazards posing major risks are floods and landslides, and hail and drought are additional threats. Overall, more than 80 percent of Armenians are at risk of exposure to catastrophic events.
