Description
The Armenia Safer Schools Technical Assistance Program supported the nationwide implementation of a Safer Schools Improvement Program (SSIP) by the country’s Ministry of Education and Science. At an estimated cost to Armenia of US$620 million, SSIP sought to make 25 percent of all the country’s schools safer.
In addition, the Asian Development Bank contributed US$88.5 million; the World Bank provided US$22 million; and the European Investment Bank was slated to allocate US$88.5 million for this effort.
Armenia
With its poverty rates declining drastically since 2004, Armenia has achieved upper-middle-income status, but its 3 million citizens continue to be exposed to major risk from natural hazards. Located in the high-activity Alps-Himalaya seismic zone, the country has historically been prone to earthquakes.
