Dominican Republic
As of 2018, the Dominican Republic had the fastest growing economy in the Latin America and Caribbean region and was classified as an upper-middle-income country. Out of its 10 million citizens, about 40 percent are of school age (that is, under age 25). The Dominican Republic is considered a hotspot for natural disasters, with exposure to droughts, earthquakes, flooding, hurricanes, landslides, heat waves, tropical storms, and tsunamis. Between 1980 and 2008, 40 natural disasters affected 2.65 million people—almost a quarter of the country’s population.
