Indonesia
As the largest economy in Southeast Asia, Indonesia has charted impressive economic growth since overcoming the Asian financial crisis of the late 1990s. A diverse archipelago nation with more than 300 ethnic groups among the 250 million citizens who live on its islands, Indonesia is located in one of the world’s most natural disaster–prone areas and is at risk for multiple hazards, including flooding, earthquakes, landslides, tsunamis, volcanoes, and cyclones. Over the past three decades, an average of 289 significant natural disasters has taken place per year in the country, with an average annual death toll of approximately 8,000.
